I hate to post such a link bait title, but the question has to be asked.
Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, CEO of Milk, redirected his blog to Google+, and that act is calling into question a couple of things, not the least of which is the title question, and what exactly are blogs for?
If blogs are a place where you can “own your content” or “grow your brand”, then the naysayers are right. You should have your own little corner of the internet, no matter how small and/or lonely that corner is.
If blogs are a social media, and are supposed to give you a platform to engage a community or audience, why are the bulk of blogs bereft of comments?
Why are blogs, or why are bloggers, so bad at building the social community on their own platforms? Maybe blogs are a terrible engagement platform?
It seems to me that the bulk of the content conversation has shifted away from blogs, and onto Twitter, Facebook, and now Google +.
I don’t have the answers, but I explore these questions in the next 3.17 minutes. Maybe we need to rethink blogging? So say we all?
